Sensation (2022)

Sensation is a collection of five custom sensory boards each in their own abstract shape and upholstered in a uniquely textured fabric choice with a companion pillow made to match each cutout in the middle of the board. The boards were and are hung and displayed at different heights and in different locations to welcome as wide of an audience to comfortably play. Boards and pillows are moveable to play as near or as far as one would like. The addition of the pillows made to fit each board provide a comfort item and play item that could even travel outside the anticipated operating zone of the work to involve someone who may be too shy or perhaps overstimulated to otherwise enter. While pillow shapes and materials match a specific board, it is not fixed to a set location.

The work was intentionally displayed in a more traditional gallery setting with a goal of welcoming play and acceptance into a space that can be traditionally seen to be more exclusive, professional, or intimidating, asking a question of where play can exist in, and has a responsibility to, the art world. After its initial exhibitions in this more traditional setting, the work has since moved into its now permanent home at non-profit preschool for children with special needs. Here the work lives in a sensory room where students can earn time to play with the available items and explore different sensations and textural experiences.
